Taman Sari Water Castle > Yogyakarta ~ Special District of Yogyakarta ~ Indonesia

Taman Sari Water Castle is a site of a former royal garden of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta. It is located about 2 km south within the grounds of the Kraton Yogyakarta. Built in mid 18th century, the Taman Sari had multiple functions, such as a resting area, a workshop, a meditation area, a defense area, and a hiding place.

Taman Sari consisted of four distinct areas:
- a large artificial lake with islands and pavilions located in the west,
- a bathing complex in the centre,
- a complex of pavilions and pools in the south,
- a smaller lake in the east.
Today only the central bathing complex is well preserved, while the other areas have been largely occupied by the Kampung Taman settlement.

Yogyakarta Palace Complex including Taman Sari Watercastle has been listed to World Heritage Site since 1995.

This is my first time went to this place, even I have been stayed in Yogyakarta for 5 years. This place is amazing, I have never thought that there’s this kind of place in Indonesia. It’s a pity that when we arrived there, it’s raining. So, we can’t explore too much because of rain. And also, it’s hard to take picture while raining. But I took some.

I visit the Bathing Complex and Gumuling Well (Sumur gumuling).

The Bathing Complex is currently the most popular tourist attraction.

Gumuling Well was another one-storeyed circular structure that forms another artificial island. When we went there, we have to passed the underground tunnel. Gumuling Well was used as a Mosque. It is located in the west side.
